Located in Redding, California, Simpson University is a private, accredited university of liberal arts offering biblical and professional studies.It is a certified member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, an evangelical denomination noted for its promotion of worldwide missionary work and ministry.In 1921, the university was established as Simpson Bible Institute in Seattle, Washington. Newberry, it was initially designed to promote spiritual growth and prepare students for Christian life and service, especially overseas.The institute was named after Albert Benjamin Simpson, a Presbyterian minister who pioneered the Bible institute movement during the late-19th century, and founded the Christian and Missionary Alliance.The school was moved to San Francisco, California, in 1955. That year, the name was changed to Simpson Bible College.In 1971, the school became a liberal arts college by offering professional as well as biblical studies, and it was renamed Simpson College. In 1989, the institution was relocated to its current location in Redding.Today, Simpson offers 24 bachelor degree programs and four master's programs in teaching and ministry.Associates degree programs include biblical studies, pastoral studies, and social science for teachers. ASPIRE, an adult degree-completion program, helps students to achieve their degree in as few as 16 months.Simpson University has an enrollment of about 1,250 students who represent a range of Christian denominations. Approximately 50 percent are members of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, and others are associated with more than 30 denominations as well as several independent churches.Small class sizes give students the opportunity to interact one-on-one with professors in a personal learning environment.The campus consists of about 90 acres, on which rest 12 major buildings. The library, a 9,200-square-foot facility in the Grubbs Learning Center, houses more than 100,000 volumes and provides seating for 115.Extra-curricular options range from an arts club, to the student senate, to intramural sports. The sports teams, known as Red Hawks, compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in the California Pacific Conference.
